  • Snoring is more than an annoyance but can be indicative of much more serious health condition that can result in many chronic diseases.

As we fall asleep and get into the deeper stage of sleeping known as REM sleep. Muscle relaxation occurs. As the tongue which is a muscle relaxes it presses on the tissues at the back of the throat causing narrowing of the airway. Air passing through the narrow airway create a turbulence which in turn cause the uvula and soft palate to vibrate and crate the similar snoring sound.

Mild snoring does not usually require treatment but it has been shown that when was improved with an oral orthotics (a device that fits in your mouth), can result in marital relations.

Severe snoring has been shown to have correlation for increased risk of heart attack, stroke, 70% of the time, weight gain, and premature aging. As we get older we lose muscle tone everywhere including our palate. This makes it flabbier and more susceptible to vibration. Weight gain causes narrowing of the airway due to increase fat deposition structures around our airway and throat.

Some of the causes of snoring

    Large tongue

    Low soft palate

    Excessive fat in the neck

    Large tonsils and adenoids

  • Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome (UARS)

UARS is a situation where the airway narrows to the point that result it an increase effort to breath. It is similar to breathing through a straw instead of a hose. The obstruction in breathing result in the body working extremely hard to draw air into the lung. As the disorder get worse, it results in chronic health issues.

    The obstruction eventually results in a chronic state of low grade stress which can result in;

    Chronic fatigue syndromes

    Poor sleep quality

    Migraine and headaches

    Insomnia

    Depression

    Anxiety

    Attention deficit disorders

    Low and high blood pressure

    Cold hands

    Dizziness

    Fibromyalgia

    Recurrent sinus infection
